Join TFEPS on Saturday, November 22, for a tour of the Gifford Arboretum at the University of Miami. Established in 1947 by Drs. Frank J. Rimoldi and Roy Woodbury, professors of tropical botany at UM, in 1949 the arboretum was named for Dr. John C. Gifford, the first U.S. citizen to earn a Ph.D. in forestry.
The arboretum quickly became home to several hundred tropical tree and shrub species, but by the 1980s it had turned a little ragged. However, Kathy Gaubatz, a Coral Gables resident, sparked a revival of the three-acre property. Although the arboretum was fortunately spared from significant damage by Hurricane Andrew, later storms, including Hurricane Irma, did leave their marks. However, thanks to great leadership by a succession of directors, the arboretum has overcome those insults.
Come see for yourselves what a gem has been created on the northwest corner of U.M. And, if time permits, we can expand the tour to include the university’s excellent Palmetum. Start time is 10:00 a.m. The entrance to the parking lot is on San Amaro Dr., five blocks north of the traffic circle at Miller Rd., and just below where San Amaro meets Campo Sano Ave. A sign marks the entrance.
We will meet by the main entrance.
Saturday, November 22nd, 2025 at 10:00 am
