Helminthostachys zelaynica

This unusual fern is a member of the Ophioglossaceae.   It is monotypic and just like its family members, it has a separate fertile spike. This fern in found in several areas throughout Southeast Asia.

Fertile spike of Helminthostachys zeylanica

This plant is approximately 9 years old.  During its growing season it will produce
perhaps 2 separate fronds; after this frond is finished "flowering," it will die back and
a new frond will emerge.  The second frond will last until the cooler months and then
die back.  A new frond will be produced the following Spring.
