zelaynica This unusual fern is a member of the Ophioglossaceae. It is monotypic and just like its family members, it has a separate fertile spike. This fern in found in several areas throughout Southeast Asia. Fertile spike of Helminthostachys zeylanica This plant is approximately 9 years old. During its growing season it will produce perhaps 2 separate fronds; after this frond is finished "flowering," it will die back and a new frond will emerge. The second frond will last until the cooler months and then die back. A new frond will be produced the following Spring.
